A 'train to the sea' is perhaps the best way to describe the strong link between Nīmes and its beach, at le Grau du Roi. Whether by train, by bus or simply by car, you have less than 50 km to go to enjoy the beach, the sea and the exciting atmosphere of the shore.
Originally a small fishing port, le Grau du Roi has today become one of the biggest fishing and water sports centers on the Mediterranean.
You cannot leave the coast before visiting Aigues
Mortes,
a fortified mediaeval town built by Saint Louis and situated amidst
ponds and salt marshes. It is from here that the king left on the
crusade to liberate the holy places.
The tower of Constance, one of the fortified towers which was later
transformed into a prison, owes its name to the tragic episode of
the wars of religion when Huguenot women were locked up in it.
